Termination of employment - avoiding common pitfalls

Thanks to all of those who attended our employment law roundup on 10 December. It was great to see you all and wrap up a very interesting (and busy!) year in employment law and HR. The Sheffield Employment team will be running quarterly employment law workshops again throughout 2025.

At our next session on Wednesday 5 March, the team will be looking at termination of employment and how to do this lawfully. Each time an employment contract is terminated is different and each case has its own risks.

Ensuring employment is terminated properly is probably one of the most important jobs of managers/HR professionals, as small mistakes can have serious financial and reputational consequences. The team will be sharing their knowledge and experience about this topic at the workshop which will include looking in detail at the following:

• The importance of a fair procedure and what this looks like

• When short service dismissals are not so straightforward

• Terminating an employee who is AWOL

• The importance of consistency in decision making

• Heat of the moment resignations and how to tackle them

• Dealing with disclosures and allegations made after termination

The workshop is intended to be informal and interactive, with attendees able to learn from each other as well as ask questions of our legal experts.

As usual, the workshop is free to attend and breakfast will be served from 8:30, ready for a prompt 9:00 start. The workshop will finish around 10:30.
