Freeths advises Centrica on strategic battery storage acquisition
The Freeths Clean Energy team is delighted to have advised Centrica Business Solutions on its acquisition of project rights for the development of a 30MW 2hr battery energy storage system (BESS) in Dyce, Aberdeenshire - part of Centrica Energy Assets' plan to deliver 900MW of solar and BESS assets by 2026.
The Dyce project is located near a grid connection point for North Sea offshore wind farms and is expected to play a key role in managing intermittency and network constraints as the UK transitions to net zero. The Freeths team was led by Charlotte Hugo (Director, Corporate) and included Emily Settle (Partner, Corporate), Fatima Hammad (Senior Associate, Corporate), Ben Treasure (Legal Assistant, Corporate), Andrew Maxwell (Partner, Competition), Reece Ballett (Associate, Energy) and Clare King (Partner, Energy). Scots law advice was provided by Harper Macleod, whose team included Omar Ali (Partner, Energy), Peter Ferguson (Partner, Planning), Winston Roberts (Associate, Planning) and Lewis Hendry (Associate, Property).Charlotte Hugo said "It was fantastic to work with the Centrica Business Solutions team on this key acquisition as they continue to grow Centrica's battery portfolio. Battery storage is critical to the UK's journey to net zero and the Government's target of achieving a green electricity grid by 2035. It was a brilliant team effort, working collaboratively with Cragside Energy and their advisors, and a pleasure to work with Simon, Dhan and the CBS team alongside Harper Macleod.”
