A written statement issued on 04 December 2024 by the Minister for Migration and Citizenship Seema Malhotra MP confirms that Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) although expiring on 31 December 2024, will remain valid travel evidence until at least 31 March 2025.
Extending use of BRPs
This update comes in after concerns were raised about the tight deadline for all migrants to transition to digital eVisas by 31 December 2024, with people being unable to set up their UKVI account, many still unaware of the change, and many experiencing IT issues with their eVisas being inaccessible or showing incorrect information.
This extension is welcomed as it should help to reduce travel disruption and delays for many migrants who will be travelling after 31 December 2024. People should still try to set up their UKVI account, and to access their eVisa. However, they can also now rely on their BRP as evidence of status when travelling in and out of the UK until at least 31 March 2025.
Support for Transition
Local and national organisations have been funded by the Home Office to provide support to migrants in setting up their UKVI account and accessing their eVisa. This includes assistance for vulnerable individuals and those facing difficulties, such as those without valid identity documents.
You can view the list of supporting organisations here.
Legacy Document Holders
Holders of legacy documents, such as passports with ink stamps, are encouraged to secure an eVisa. They can submit a No Time Limit application, which will automatically create a UKVI account for them. The process has been streamlined to make it easier for these individuals to access their eVisas.
Engagement and Feedback
The Home Office is engaging with stakeholders, including migrants, carriers and community organisations, to ensure a smooth transition. People experiencing technical issues with their eVisa should reach out to the Home Office to try to have these issues rectified.
The move to a wholly digital UK immigration system has been controversial from the beginning, with many voicing their concerns over the strict deadline and lack of support and information provided on the changes. It is some peace of mind that BRPs can still be used past their expiry of 31 December 2024 when travelling in and out of the UK, however, it is clear that the Home Office are still not ready for the new digital system.
Our Immigration Team are on hand to provide you with help and support throughout this transition.
