Allegations of Medical Negligence at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust
Recent revelations have brought to light a significant increase in the number of cases under investigation at University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust. Initially, Sussex Police were examining 105 cases of alleged preventable deaths and injuries, but this number has now doubled to over 200. The investigation, which began in 2023, focuses on care provided between 2015 and 2021, particularly in the neurosurgery and general surgery departments.
Whistleblowers and Allegations
The investigation was prompted by two whistleblowers who raised concerns about medical negligence, including at least 40 deaths. The increase in cases is attributed to more families coming forward with their experiences. One notable case involves Wendy Gibbs, who suffered life-threatening injuries during a surgery performed by Mr. Marc Lamah. Although her case is not part of the police investigation, it highlights the ongoing issues within the trust.
Trust’s Response and Ongoing Challenges
University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust has acknowledged the challenges faced by its neurosurgery team and has expressed a commitment to improving care. Despite improvements since 2017, the trust recognizes that significant issues remain. The police investigation is ongoing, with potential charges of gross negligence manslaughter and corporate manslaughter being considered.
As the investigation continues, it is crucial for affected families to seek legal advice to understand their rights and potential avenues for redress. We have recently acted for a client and recovered £3.4 million in compensation from the Trust as a result of the admitted failures in our clients care.
