Expired BRPs extended until 01 June 2025

The Home Office has again extended its own deadline to allow expired Biometric Residence Permits (BRPs) to be used by migrants when travelling in and out of the UK as evidence of their immigration status. An expired BRP can only be used by people who have leave to remain in the UK, despite the expiry of their BRP. The deadline for the ongoing use of an expired BRP has now been extended to 01 June 2025.

It may be that this deadline is extended further.

The Home Office’s plan was to replace the need for BRPs by introducing the digital system of UKVI accounts and eVisas. These have been introduced in a move towards the digitalisation of the immigration system with the intention of allowing easy access to people’s immigration status, and replacing the need for physical documentation.

It was initially planned that BRPs would no longer be used from 01 January 2025, however, this was extended to 31 March 2025, to help to support the transition to the new system, and to try to reduce the risk of being stopped at the border, or unable to re-enter the UK.

The Home Office estimate that there are around 600,000 people who have not yet set up their UKVI account and accessed their eVisa. As such, they have extended the deadline for the use of expired BRPs, to give people more time to adjust to the new digital system.
