Important updates on the Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

The UK has recently updated its Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme. Below are some key points:

  1. Eligibility: ETAs are required for visitors to the UK who do not need a visa for short stays or do not already have UK immigration status. An ETA is not a visa, it is permission to travel to the UK, not enter the UK. Non-visa nationals who are travelling to the UK without a visa will need an ETA and can apply from 8 January 2025. Non-visa nationals are those who do not require a visa before travelling to the UK as a visitor and includes EU/Swiss, US, Australian and Canadian nationals. Eligible Europeans can apply from 5 March 2025 and will need an ETA to travel to the UK from 2 April 2025.

  2. Application Process: The application for an ETA is quick and simple and must be obtained online before travel. It is completed through the ‘UK ETA app’ available on Google Play and the Apple App Store. Applicants need to provide contact and passport details, a valid photo, and answer a set of questions. The Home Office will then carry out checks related to identity, crime, immigration history and security. On approval the applicant will receive an e-mail confirming the ETA.

  3. Cost and Validity: An ETA costs £10 and permits multiple journeys to the UK for stays of up to six months at a time over two years or until the holder’s passport expires, whichever is sooner.

  4. Security: The ETA helps enhance UK border security by collecting biographic, biometric, and contact details of applicants, which helps prevent the arrival of those who may pose a threat.

  5. Rejections: If an ETA application is rejected, applicants will be informed of the reason and can reapply. There is no appeal process for ETA refusals; instead, applicants must apply for a visa if they still wish to travel to the UK.
