Recent Paediatric News Coverage in Cambridge: A Call for Vigilance and Transparency

In recent weeks, the paediatric healthcare community in Cambridge has been shaken by troubling news. An orthopaedic surgeon at Addenbrooke's Hospital has been suspended following a review that found nine surgeries performed on children fell "below expected standards" (read more here).  The review, completed in January 2025, focused on complex paediatric hip surgeries conducted over the past two and a half years. The findings revealed that the outcomes of these surgeries impacted the children's mobility, particularly around their hips.

Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has taken immediate steps to address the issue. The surgeon was initially placed on restricted duties and later suspended following the review (read more here). The Trust has also informed the General Medical Council, NHS England, and the Care Quality Commission. Chief Executive Roland Sinker has publicly apologized, emphasising the Trust's commitment to transparency and patient safety.
