Revolutionising detection of subarachnoid haemorrhages: research confirms importance of CT scans

Subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH)

A subarachnoid haemorrhage (SAH) is a serious condition where bleeding occurs in the space around the brain. Common symptoms include a sudden, severe headache often described as the worst headache of one's life. Other symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, double vision, sensitivity to light, neck stiffness, and seizures. These symptoms require immediate medical attention to prevent severe complications.

Misdiagnosing of subarachnoid haemorrhage

Misdiagnosing a subarachnoid haemorrhage can have serious consequences. If the condition is not diagnosed correctly or quickly, patients might not get the urgent treatment they need, leading to severe complications, long-term disability, or even death. Misdiagnosis can also cause emotional distress and cause patients to lose trust in their healthcare providers.

Recent studies have shown that CT scans are very effective in diagnosing SAH, especially if performed within six hours of the onset of symptoms. These scans can detect SAH with almost 99% accuracy during this critical window, emphasising the need for prompt medical assessment. However, the accuracy of CT scans drops significantly after this six-hour window, making early medical attention very important.

Researchers have also looked at how combining CT scans with tests of the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) can improve diagnosis. One such test, called xanthochromia testing, checks for certain substances in the CSF and is quite accurate, but it doesn't always catch every case of SAH. By combining this test with another that counts red blood cells, doctors can reduce the chances of a false positive result. This combined approach can help ensure a more accurate diagnosis.

What we think

Lauren Green, Senior Associate in our Clinical Negligence team said: "The recent research highlighting the high accuracy of CT scans in detecting subarachnoid haemorrhages within the first six hours is a significant advancement in medical diagnostics. As a medical negligence solicitor, I am encouraged by these findings, as they underscore the importance of timely and accurate diagnosis in preventing severe outcomes. However, it also emphasises the critical need for healthcare providers to act swiftly and ensure that patients presenting with symptoms receive immediate and appropriate imaging to avoid tragic consequences."
