Freeths ‘Woman with Edge’ winner announced at prestigious awards

Freeths helped make history by announcing its ‘Woman with Edge’ winner at the 42nd Women of the Year Awards and Luncheon which took place in Manchester for the first time ever.

Presented by Freeths’ Partner Lisa Gilligan, Julianne Ponan MBE, founder of and CEO of Creative Nature, a top 14 allergen-free food range, was honoured with the Award following her commitment and drive to overcome obstacles throughout her journey, which made her a standout nominee.

The competition for the award was so hotly contended that the firm also incorporated a ‘highly commended’ achievement which was given to Sophie Pender, founder of the 93% Club, a members' club open to those who attended state schools across the country.

Commenting on the Awards, Lisa Gilligan said: “It was an honour to be amongst such an inspiring group of women and judging this year’s Woman with Edge Award was incredibly difficult. The talent and dedication which was displayed by each of the finalists was truly outstanding."

As one of three major categories at the prestigious annual event, also including ‘Business Woman of the Year’ and the inaugural ‘Emmeline Pankhurst Award: Woman of Achievement’, the awards saw a combined 300 nominations and 20 finalists shortlisted. 

Ronnie Savage, CEO and Founder of Jomas Engineering, was the deserving recipient of the 2024 Business Women of the Year award highlighting her advocacy for diversity, equity, and inclusion. And, celebrated in the city where the suffragette movement began, Manchester, the ‘Emmeline Pankhurst Award: Woman of Achievement’ was awarded to Figen Murray OBE. This recognised her work and strength in campaigning for ‘Martyn’s Law’, which aims to better protect the public from terrorism in the aftermath of her son’s death at the hands of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack.

More than 400 attendees came from across all sectors within the region. These included representatives from Manchester businesses including AO Arena, LWC Drinks Limited, and Harvey Nicholls Manchester represented. Writer, and actress Sally Lindsay, who is the residing President of the awards, gave a speech to welcome guests and celebrated the event being in Manchester, the ‘creative capital of the UK’ and one of the best places to visit in the world in as cited by the New York Times earlier this year.

Zalena Vandrewala, Managing Associate at Freeths and Chair of the Women of the Year, added: “The build-up to this year’s awards, being held in Manchester for the very first time, has been nothing short of thrilling. It was amazing to see the day come to life as we hosted hundreds of guests to celebrate the sheer talent and inspiration of women across the UK, and of course, crown our well-deserved winners.”

These national awards have a long-standing reputation for recognising, highlighting and celebrating women’s achievements. Past business winners include Baroness Karren Brady, Dame Julie Kenny CBE, Dr Sharon Redrobe OBE, Fiona Allen and Jenny Campbell.
