Medical Negligence that results in amputation often occurs where there are surgical errors or a missed diagnosis.
There is heightened risk of Amputation for patients with underlying health problems such as diabetes and peripheral vascular disease.
Amputation often has a huge psychological and physical impact, but even more so if it could have been avoided with the right treatment.
Some of the types of medical negligence we see leading to amputation include:

- Clinical error
- Missed or delayed diagnosis and treatment of meningitis or encephalitis
- Missed or delayed diagnosis of sepsis or localised infection such as osteomyelitis or cellulitis
- Poorly performed joint replacement surgery
- Poor management of bed sores / pressure injuries/ ulcers

- Missed or delayed diagnosis and treatment of vascular conditions
- Missed or delayed diagnosis of cancer

Examples of our amputation cases
Client A
Client A who underwent an amputation of their great and second toe due to a delay in effective treatment for a diabetic foot ulcer. As a result of their injuries their balance and mobility were compromised. They also had significant need for care and assistance and was unable to parent his daughter properly in the initial period after his injury. They worked in the construction industry and had significant loss of earnings over a two-year period and into the future.
We were able to secure a settlement to compensate them for these losses and to include a costly but necessary programme of future private podiatry care and orthotics over the rest of their lifetime, to reduce the risk of further tissue breakdown and make them as stable and safe as possible, so that they could resume their family life and work.
Client B
Client B underwent a below the knee amputation. They were diabetic and developed a deep-seated infection in their foot after poor treatment for infection of a minor burn. The damages agreed enabled the client to make suitable adaptations to their property and vehicle as well as to purchase specialised prosthetics including a water leg for swimming to enable them to exercise and rebuild fitness, which was beneficial for their ongoing diabetes management.
Client C
Client C will require an above the knee amputation in their lifetime due to poorly completed joint replacement surgery. This will be factored into settlement negotiations to ensure that the client has access to all the support that they need when the time comes.
Client D
Client D underwent a below the knee amputation after developing pressure ulcers and osteomyelitis. Damages were claimed for care, aids and equipment and adaptations to the clients home.
Client E
Client E underwent an above the knee amputation due to a vascular condition after a delay in diagnosis and treatment. Due to the resulting mobility issues, they required a wheelchair, prosthetics and significant needs for aids and equipment. This client had not yet started a family and the settlement included provision for support for her to care for her planned future children.
Client F
Client F underwent an amputation of both feet due to gangrene, alongside multiple other complications including brain injury due to surgical negligence.
