ATAS Certificates for Skilled Workers in the UK

ATAS certificates: Academic Technology Approval Scheme

If you are an international researcher or student who wants to work in the UK in certain sensitive subjects, you may need to obtain an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate as part of your visa application. This is a free of charge clearance that confirms that your research does not pose a risk to national security or contribute to the development of weapons of mass destruction.

Who needs an ATAS certificate?

You will need an ATAS certificate if you are applying for a Skilled Worker visa and all of the following apply:

  • You are not a national of one of the exempt countries (see the list here)
  • You are being sponsored by an employer that also holds a Student sponsor licence
  • Your job falls under one of the relevant occupation codes (see the list here)
  • Your research is at PhD level or above in one of the relevant subject areas (see the list here)

How to apply for an ATAS certificate?

You can apply for an ATAS certificate online on the Gov.UK website. You will need to provide information about your personal details, education history, research project, and sponsor. You will also need to submit a research statement that describes the aims, objectives, methodology, and expected outcomes of your research. The statement should be no longer than 500 words and should avoid technical jargon.

You should apply for an ATAS certificate as soon as possible, as it can take up to 30 working days to process your application. You will receive your ATAS certificate by email. You must include a copy of your ATAS certificate in your Skilled Worker visa application.
