Moving to the UK on a temporary work visa

If you want to visit or work in the UK for a short period of time, you may need to apply for one of the following visas:

  • Government authorised exchange visa: This visa is for people who want to come to the UK for a work experience programme, training, research or fellowship through an approved scheme. You can stay for up to 12 or 24 months depending on the scheme
  • Academic visitor visa: This visa is for academic professionals who want to do research, teach or take part in an exchange programme at a UK institution. You can stay for up to 12 months
  • Permitted paid engagement visa: This visa is for people who want to do specific paid work in the UK, such as giving a lecture, examining students, providing advocacy or taking part in an arts event. You can stay for up to 1 month
  • Temporary worker visas: These visas are for people who want to work in the UK in certain sectors, such as charity, creative, religious, sporting, government or international organisation. You can stay for up to 12 or 24 months depending on the sector and your sponsor
  • Graduate visa: This visa is for people who have completed a degree at a UK institution and want to work or look for work in the UK. You can stay for up to 2 or 3 years depending on your qualification
  • Youth mobility scheme: This visa is for people aged 18 to 30 from certain countries who want to live, work and travel in the UK. You can stay for up to 2 years
  • Seasonal worker scheme: This visa is for people who want to do seasonal work in the UK in the edible horticulture sector. You can stay for up to 6 months
  • Overseas domestic worker visa: This visa is for domestic workers who are employed by someone from outside the UK and are travelling with them to the UK. You can stay for up to 6 months.
