Lee is a Senior Associate in the Freeths employment team, based in Sheffield.
He specialises in advising clients on both contentious and non-contentious employment law and HR matters. Although his work predominantly involves advising private and public sector employer clients, he also regularly supports individuals in exercising their legal rights at work.

Business legal services
Lee’s day-to-day role includes advising and providing support to employers on a breadth of employment and HR matters. This includes:
- Supporting employers with day-to-day management of staff in areas such as health and wellbeing, absence, disciplinaries, performance management, grievances, whistleblowing and pay.
- Advising on small-scale and large-scale redundancy processes and TUPE transfers.
- Drafting and advising on employment contracts and service agreements for employees and directors.
- Advising on employment status issues including how to manage and mitigate legal risk.
- Advising on complex holiday pay matters, including cases of historic liability.
- Drafting and advising on casual contracts, zero hours contracts and contractor/consultancy agreements.
- Defending claims in the Employment Tribunal including complying with Tribunal directions and providing advocacy at preliminary and final hearings.
- Providing training to HR advisers and managers on employment rights and obligations, managing processes and resolving difficult situations.
- Advising on data protection matters including drafting data protection policies and privacy notices.

Lee has significant experience in providing employment and HR support to individuals, including employees, workers and self-employed contractors. His services include:
- Supporting employees to resolve disputes with their employers, including drafting and advising on complex grievances and without prejudice correspondence.
- Negotiating and advising on settlement agreements.
- Advising on employment contracts, casual contracts, zero hours contracts and consultancy agreements.
- Drafting and submitting claims to the Employment Tribunal and providing support throughout the litigation process. This includes complying with Tribunal directions and providing advocacy at preliminary and final hearings.
- Providing general advice and guidance employment law and HR issues.
Recent Work
- Lee advised an employer on a complex redundancy process which involved numerous redundancy pools, the creation of alternative roles and bumping.
- Lee has advised several employers on historic holiday pay liability following notable cases in the Supreme Court. Lee has worked with his clients to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with the law going forward.
- Lee represented an employer in the Employment Tribunal in defence of claims for unfair dismissal and disability discrimination. Lee successfully resisted an application by the claimant to amend their claim with additional grounds of discrimination and was successful in getting the entire claim dismissed at a preliminary hearing.
- Lee represented an employer in the Employment Tribunal in defence of a claim relating to alleged trade union blacklisting. Lee provided advocacy at the Tribunal hearing, obtained an order striking out the claim and was successful in applying for costs against the claimant.
- Lee represented an individual at a judicial mediation in relation to a discrimination claim brought against a local authority, securing a favourable settlement equating to around four years’ gross salary for his client.
