Hydrogen
Hydrogen for Net Zero
Hydrogen is considered to be a key component in the UK’s drive towards Net Zero. Hydrogen has the potential to replace fossil fuels in a multitude of sectors, including manufacturing and industrial uses, transport, heating, and for power generation.
For the hydrogen economy to succeed, significant investment is required to develop hydrogen production capacity, and increase the capability of storing and transporting hydrogen for application; these will be important to scale-up over the coming decades if the UK hydrogen supply chain is to develop into a world-leader.
Our hydrogen capabilities
Drawing on our team’s natural gas and biogas experience, and leveraging our extensive experience of developing large-scale energy projects in the UK and internationally, our hydrogen lawyers advise across the hydrogen project lifecycle, including:
- Early stage structuring, development (including real estate), and funding;
- Hydrogen sector investment and M&A;
- Hydrogen routes to market, and power supply to hydrogen production facilities;
- Construction, commissioning, and operation of hydrogen production, storage, and transportation facilities;
- Refinancing and decommissioning;
- Consenting, environmental, and health and safety regulatory matters
Our multidisciplinary team of c.100 clean energy lawyers have extensive experience and expertise in the clean energy market, and can utilise this experience to assist with emerging technologies and markets, like hydrogen. We understand the market, the legal and regulatory frameworks, and the key commercial drivers for stakeholders in the project lifecycle.
Most importantly, we really enjoy working in this area. Our core team of dedicated ‘energy geeks’ spend 100% of their time on clean energy work – projects, transactions, commercial contracts, and regulation. They typically lead on energy-related matters and draw upon resources from the wider clean energy sector group and around the firm as required.
"Freeths has an excellent team that is well-versed in complex energy issues. They are very commercially aware and always have this in mind when advising clients."
